The Effects of Smoking on Your Skin (and Hair)

February 28, 2009 Filed in: FYI, Hair Stuff, Health & Fitness, Skincare

Yup, that’s me looking very debonair with “my precious” death stick.

As brilliant as I think I am, I do some pretty stupid things.
Bad Example

I would like to say “That’s the straw that broke Joe Camel’s back,” but it wouldn’t be true.

Aside from the fact that I look like a smooth pimp, smoking is a horribly bad idea. Just today, the news broke with the terrible eye-opener that cigarettes may cause problems. Who’da thunk it? Obviously, this a tough battle to win, and I keep losing. There are two things that are needed to quit, GOD and the desire to quit. I just don’t want to quit very badly. So, maybe I can convince myself to quit while I try to get you to. If you don’t smoke then leave now – smokers only. Just kidding, I applaud you if you don’t smoke… now leave. ;)

Everyone knows the obvious risks like cancer, which should be all one needs to quit, but sometimes we’re just not very bright. So, if the health thing isn’t enough then maybe some “vain dangers” will strike a chord.

The best thing you can do to attain a beautiful, glowing complexion is to stop smoking.

Vain Reasons to Stop Smoking

  • Your breath smells worse than rotten trash.
  • Smoking ages you.
  • Smoke emits through your pores clogging them with tar and resin that cause blackheads.
  • The pores emit a stale tobacco smell.
  • Skin attains a yellowish gray, or somewhat murky complexion.
  • Smoking thins the skin.
  • Smoking depletes the collagen in your skin.
  • Smoking affects the lower and deeper part of your skin.
  • Your skin ages more rapidly and it’s elasticity is broken down causing wrinkles.
  • Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing oxygen to the tissues.
  • Nicotine adds years to your appearance.
  • Nicotine suppresses the immune system increasing risk of viral infections like warts.
  • Heavy smokers have nearly five times the risk of wrinkles compared to those who don’t.
  • Wrinkles surface around the mouth from the constant contractions of the smoking action.
  • Crow’s feet emerge around the eyes from squinting to avoid smoke in the eye.
  • Disgusting brown stains on your teeth makes it look like you’ve been chewing on a turd.
  • Healing process is delayed causing more visible scars.
  • Vitamin A depletion.
  • Vitamin C depletion which is involved in the synthesis of collagen.
  • Smoking can alter your body shape by affecting the endocrinal system, or the glands that secrete body changing hormones. This typically causes a potbelly and thin legs.
  • Smoking dehydrates your skin and hair.
  • Smoking causes deprivation of oxygen to the skin and hair.
  • One puff of cigarette smoke produces more than a trillion free radicals in your lungs. Free radicals are highly unstable oxygen molecules that cause aging.
  • The top layers of your hair will become brittle.
  • “Smoker’s Face” was added to the medical dictionary in 1985. Characteristics are lines, wrinkles, cheek lines, gauntness of features, and gray skin.

There is hope!

The human body is amazing, as it can reverse the damage done if you just stop smoking.

You can still attain a beautiful, smooth, and radiant complexion. Until then, smoking is harming your skin more than anything else, unless you scrub with battery acid.

Healing Begins 20 Minutes From Your Last Cigarette

  • 20 Minutes: Your blood pressure and pulse rate drops to normal, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increases to normal.
  • 8 Hours: Nicotine will drop 93% from the normal daily levels.
  • 12 Hours: Carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal, and the oxygen level increases to normal.
  • 48 Hours: Nerve endings begin regrowth, and your ability to smell and taste increases.
  • 72 Hours: Your body will be nicotine free.
  • 10 Days – 2 Weeks: Blood circulation in your gums and teeth return to normal.
  • 2 Weeks – 3 Months: Your risk of a heart attack decreases, and lung function improves.
  • 3 Weeks – 3 Months: Circulation drastically improves, and the chronic cough disappears.
  • 1 – 9 Months: Sinus problems, fatigue, and shortness of breath decrease. Cilia have regrown in your lungs which handles mucus, cleans your lungs, and reduces infections. Overall energy increases.
  • 1 Year: Heart disease risk drops to less than half that of a smoker.
  • 5 – 15 Years: Stroke risk drops to the same as a non-smoker.
  • 10 Years: Risk of death by lung cancer is cut in half. Cancer of the mouth, throat, and esophagus risk decreases .
  • 15 Years: Risk of heart disease is the same as someone that has never smoked.

Decisions, decisions. Either stop smoking, live longer, and look hotter, or smell like crap, look like a wrinkled up Sharpee, and die.

If you do smoke, then at least drink much tea, much water, use a sauna to clean your pores, and consider buying a water ionizer.

Peace,
Trent

Hey There, Thought I’d pay you another visit,
And, Yes, You HAVE TO quit. It is very bad for your health and especially hating see some who is good looking pick up a cig and smoke…eeeeewww! I have met guys in the past and not go out with them because they smoke. Kissing a guy who smokes, is like licking the bottom of an ashtray. Well not that I have actually licked the bottom of an ash tray, but I can only assume….lol..Stop by some time when you are on smoke break…lol..

You should quit for Mars. Whenever Donny smokes it feels like a slap in the face, like he doesn’t care how much time he has left on Earth with me. I know that isn’t *true*, but it’s certainly how it can feel, like I’m not worth quitting for. :(

to stop smoking, just do it, find a reason and remember it, bunch of religious nutters might need “god” to do bad stuff to good people, and we know they are nutters, but sane people stop smoking for genuine reasons, me, is for my 4 year old daughter, i am 42 and smoked since 13, no pills, potions, patches or mythical beasts, witch doctors, shamen, spirit guides, lucky clover, rabbits foot well you get the idea. Get i life people, do it for the right reasons, i smoked as i enjoyed it, but my daughter playing and talking to me i enjoy more.

good luck to who elso follows the path to wisdom (Facta non Verba) deeds not words my friends
