GQ’s Brett Fahlgren’s Style Tips on Business Wear

December 17, 2008 Filed in: Fashion, Gift Ideas

Not sure what to wear to the office? GQ’s Brett Fahlgren cracks the office dress code.

A typical office setting usually enforces one of two types of dress codes: business casual or professional. In order to look your best, remember to dress for success. This not just a saying, it is the truth. If you want to climb the corporate ladder and be treated better in general, then you should keep it strictly professional even when you have the option of dressing down (and, of course, work hard and play nice). You must project success and people will think of and treat you as such.

AMJ\'s Pick: Rush by Gordon Rush ShawBrett Fahlgren is GQ Magazine’s Style Correspondent and also a Guest Editor at Piperlime.com. Brett shares his tips on office style so that you can look your best while staying within the parameters of a business setting:

  • Business Casual
    • In this setting you have plenty of options. Just keep it simple with a few key styles. When in doubt, stick with basic loafers. Pair them with dark jeans and a white button-up.
    • Shades of brown are best with Khaki. Try a timeless lace up. They’re a must-have this season.
  • Professional Attire
    • If you wear a suit then you’ll want to keep an eye on the details. They’ll help you define your look.
    • The Chelsea boot is great with a fitted suit. Transition from work to a night out with ease.
    • Avoid toes that are too pointy or square. Look for a rounded toe shape. It’s versatile and modern.

My business casual tips: I would definitely say to dress up when at work. I am biased though, as I cannot stand “Dad’s” loafers. However, you can’t go wrong with a nice pair of khakis or jeans with some trendy black shoes.

My professional tips: I’m still liking the more pointy and squared tips – just my way of “stickin’ it to the man” I suppose. However, you can never go wrong with a glossy lace-up dress shoe. Remember to always shine your shoes, or you might as well go like Shoeless Joe Jackson!

Feel free to share your own tips in the comments.

Trent
