What is Microdermabrasion? (FYI)
Microdermabrasion, or “microderm”, is a cosmetic procedure that removes dead skin from your face. This a much deeper cleanser than a facial scrub. The dead skin layer is removed by abrasion. This procedure helps to repair sun-damaged skin, scars, and dark spots. This can be done at the doctor, a spa, or in a more practical at-home procedure. Seek a doctor for advanced treatment. An at-home microdermabrasion system should be done no more than once a week with a quality product. Obviously, an at-home application will render less results than done as a medical procedure, but can produce incredible results with a weekly regimen.
A doctor’s microdermabrasion procedure is not very painful and usually requires no anaesthetic. One very significant benefit of microdermabrasion is that it can be used for the treatment of acne, but it must be repeated periodically to be effective. Another crucial benefit is in the treatment of scar removal – generally only if the scar is raised, as opposed to a sunken scar.
There are a few professional microdermabrasion methods including crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion. I doubt my insurance covers the diamond method. In both crystal and diamond systems, the dead skin cells are basically scrubbed and then sucked away. It has become more common to use a wand with a roughened surface for the scrubbing, and then the vacuum for the filth. I go to the doctor a little as possible so I’m definitely sold on the at-home versions, which are as simple as washing you face – with a few other instructions.
Home microdermabrasion systems are an ever increasingly popular alternative to professional treatments. These are much cheaper and very easy to do by yourself. When you use a home microdermbrasion system your face will be visibly fresher. It works for me.
